This morning, the Government Taskforce on Emergency Planning met in the National Emergency Co-ordination Centre.
The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) reported that all Irish airports are open and the ash plume remains off the western coast. The ash cloud is now about 3,200 km long and 1,600 km wide.
Met Éireann reported that according to the dispersion model charts, airspace today is clear from Ireland into Europe. While the plume remains close to us, current forecasts predict that we should have minimal disruption over the coming week. This is because volcanic activity has reduced and wind direction has changed, leading to favourable conditions.
The Environmental Protection Agency reported that that no evidence of deterioration in air or water quality levels as a result of volcanic ash, has been detected through ongoing monitoring in Ireland or in Europe.
The Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport reported that Minister Hanafin will meet with representatives of the tourism sector this afternoon. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss how the tourism industry can respond to the current difficulties.
The Taskforce heard from the Commission for Aviation Regulation that members of the public are heeding advice to keep in contact with their air carriers and websites.
The Department of Foreign Affairs reported their website is being constantly updated. Low levels of calls are being received regarding flight disruptions.
The Taskforce emphasised today that Irish citizens travelling abroad should register their details online with the Department of Foreign Affairs. Registration is voluntary and passenger details will be passed to the Irish embassy/consulate nearest the person's destination(s). This information will only be used to contact passengers in the event of an emergency and will not be passed to any third parties. Separately, registration will allow Irish embassies/consulates abroad have a clear picture of the number of Irish citizens in a certain place if the volcanic ash disruption continues.
The Taskforce highlighted again the importance for air passengers of checking regularly the websites of their air carriers. Intending passengers should also check the Irish Aviation Authority website for full information on flight disruptions.
The Taskforce is continuing to monitor developments.
